Job Title: Chief Engineer

Location: Aloft Atlanta at The Battery Atlanta

Reports to: General Manager

Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, exempt

Job Overview:

The Chief Engineer at Encore Hospitality is responsible for the maintenance and overall engineering operations of the hotel. This position ensures the safety, efficiency, and operational excellence of all mechanical systems, building infrastructure, and physical assets of the property. The Chief Engineer leads a team of technicians, oversees repairs, preventive maintenance programs, and energy management initiatives, while maintaining compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Maintenance & Operations:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the engineering department, ensuring that all mechanical systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, etc.) are functioning optimally.
  • Ensure that all guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house spaces are well-maintained and in compliance with quality standards.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and emergencies in a timely and efficient manner, prioritizing guest and staff safety.
  • Implement and oversee preventive maintenance programs for all hotel equipment, building systems, and assets.
  • Coordinate and supervise external contractors for repairs and maintenance, ensuring work is completed on schedule and within budget.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Lead, train, and supervise the engineering team, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and technical excellence.
  • Ensure the engineering team is properly equipped and trained to handle daily tasks and emergency situations.
  • Assign daily tasks, conduct performance evaluations, and provide ongoing training to improve team skills.
  • Monitor and manage team schedules, ensuring 24/7 coverage for the hotel’s engineering needs.

Energy & Cost Management:

  • Develop and implement energy management initiatives to reduce operational costs while maintaining guest comfort and safety.
  • Monitor utility consumption (electricity, gas, water, etc.) and implement strategies to improve energy efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities for cost savings through more efficient equipment usage and improved maintenance protocols.
  • Manage the engineering department’s budget, tracking expenses, and ensuring cost-effective operations.

Compliance & Safety:

  • Ensure that the hotel is in full compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, safety regulations, and environmental guidelines.
  • Regularly inspect the property to identify safety risks, and coordinate with management to implement corrective measures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, repairs, and safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular safety drills and training sessions for the engineering team and other hotel staff to ensure readiness in case of emergencies.

Project Management:

  • Plan, coordinate, and oversee renovation, refurbishment, and expansion projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and budget.
  • Liaise with architects, contractors, and vendors during major construction or renovation projects, ensuring minimal disruption to hotel operations.
  • Ensure that all engineering and construction projects comply with building and safety codes.

Inventory & Procurement:

  • Manage the inventory of tools, supplies, and replacement parts, ensuring that necessary materials are always on hand for repairs and maintenance.
  • Work with the procurement team to source and negotiate contracts for equipment and supplies, ensuring quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Track and record equipment usage, maintenance history, and asset life cycles to plan future replacements or upgrades.

Qualifications and Skills:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Certification in HVAC, electrical systems, or other relevant technical areas is advantageous.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in hotel or building engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC systems, and general building maintenance.
  • Experience in managing large teams and coordinating maintenance schedules and projects.

Skills:

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to train and motivate staff.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Proficient in the use of building management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols, building codes, and energy management systems.
  • Strong project management and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies calmly and efficiently.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift heavy equipment and perform physical tasks such as climbing ladders and working in confined spaces.
  • Flexibility to work long hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move around the property for extended periods.

Work Environment:

  • Fast-paced hotel environment requiring quick problem-solving and a proactive approach to maintenance.
  • Frequent interactions with other departments, contractors, and vendors.
  • Combination of indoor and outdoor work, with exposure to potentially hazardous equipment and materials.
